You might think that your school is boring and uneventful, but at least the only thing you have to worry about there is a failed test or loose bowel movement. Some students in certain anime have to worry about physical power dynamics, zombies, and even demons. Suffice to say, life in an anime school is not just about staring existentially out the windows, absentee teachers, or inviting your crush to lunch.
There are also schools that range from combat academies masquerading as a faux alma mater to hell holes where the students literally die en masse. One might even wonder why they continue to be called "schools" but arguably, they do capture what it feels like to be in one—albeit they tend to exaggerate. Anyway, here's a list of those schools you'll want to avoid even if you're the anime's protagonist.
10 HYAKKOU PRIVATE ACADEMY - KAKEGURUI
No one has ever died in Kakegurui's Hyakkou Private Academy. In fact, the school's only quirk is that the students have nothing else to do but gamble. That's it, no classes, no curriculum, all they have to do is to play casino machines or gamble with one another. The catch, however, is not everyone wins in a gamble.
In Hyakkou, if you bet your finger or your life and you lose, not only are you bad in gambling, but you're also royally screwed. These guys take gambling wagers and stakes seriously. So much so that the "losers" in that school basically get subjected to humiliating slavery. For some, that might be worse than a quick and painless death.
9 DEATH WEAPON MEISTER ACADEMY - SOUL EATER
While 'Death Weapon Meister Academy' sounds like a pre-pubescent kid's edgy imaginary place, it's a lot more dangerous than most other anime schools. This academy itself is run by none other than Death (you may now excuse the school's name). The students are all scythes used by the famed Shinigami against evil people.
Now, scythes are actually humanoids that can transform into, well, scythes so as to clear up your confusion. In that regard, these scythes are raised by Death Weapon Meister Academy where each of them must collect 99 evil souls to practically "graduate." Sounds simple enough but the potential danger is still there, especially when you have to use a student to reap someone's soul out.
8 DOMORI ELEMENTARY - HELL TEACHER NUBE
Hell Teacher Nube is an odd hidden gem from the 1990s that combines horror anime with comedy (though more of the latter part). Its protagonist is basically Eikichi Onizuka from Great Teacher Onizuka but with a demonic hand that gives him supernatural powers and an edge against evil creatures. How does he take advantage of this power? By becoming a teacher.
In doing so, Nube gets to protect school children of Domori Elementary from hungry demons, vengeful spirits, and sometimes from his uncontrollable demon hand and persona itself. In that regard, you wouldn't want to be a student in Nube's class as some demons even seek out Nube himself for a fight. On top of that, Domori Elementary just can't catch a break from all the supernatural threats.
7 TOUDOU ACADEMY - TENJHO TENGE
In Tenjho Tenge's Toudou Academy, nearly everyone is a bully. To make matters worse, those bullies are all proficient in lethal martial arts or have supernatural or superhuman capabilities. On a daily basis, at least one student gets beaten up and with no repercussions because somehow, the teachers are all nonexistent.
Oh, and the school is also run by factions who have had an unresolved conflict since the Japanese feudal era. At most, the only thing the students can do is to get caught in the crossfire as collateral damage or pick a side and be a little bit safer.
6 NINJA ACADEMY - NARUTO
Speaking of intentionally subjecting your students to harm, the Ninja Academy in Konohagakure is no exception. As soon as they could run (in Naruto style or otherwise), all kids are taught to use throwing knives, fire breathing, and turning oneself into objects-- all with the intent or capability to kill others.
That's not all, as soon as they come of age, every student is subjected to Chunin Exams where students have been killed, rendered disabled, maimed, and tortured, sometimes by their teachers, even. In hindsight, that's a small price to pay for learning how to make sexy gender-bender clones of yourself or to be able to punch your lousy emo best friend without any guilt.
5 HONNOUJI ACADEMY - KILL LA KILL
In Honnoji Academy in Kill la Kill, getting inside your school is next to impossible especially if you're late. For one, the school's tyrannical president has established a periodic event called No Late Day where students have to avoid lethal traps and obstacles just to get to class. There is also an event where the students have to mandatorily wage a never-ending war against rival schools.
It's not like there are many classes, however; it appears there's only one and everyone is also more focused on violently fighting one another in order to gain status and wealth as well as their uniforms which may or may not kill them if they're not worthy.
4 HOPE'S PEAK ACADEMY - DANGANRONPA: THE ANIMATION
Someone just had to come up with a school that incorporates battle royale mechanics. Hence, Daganronpa: The Animation-- a series based on a video game that spliced the insanely ubiquitous 21st-century fad of battle royale into anime. At the heart of Danganronpa's battle royale premise is Hope's Peak Academy.
It's a place where academically exceptional students are lured unwittingly into, you guessed it, a battle royale where the punishment for losers is usually a gruesome death. It's not that basic though; if the school finds out that a student dies, the suspects are brought to trial by their classmates. If the suspect was tried guilty correctly, he or she dies; if the classmates pass the sentence incorrectly, then they die. It's brutal, but it's fair.
3 FUJIMI HIGH SCHOOL - HIGHSCHOOL OF THE DEAD
Well, this just had to be here. It's a high school thrust smack dab at the epicenter of a zombie apocalypse. Everyone who isn't handsome, beautiful, comedic, or hot enough to be ecchi-material is as good as undead chow; that's exactly what happens to most students-- in fact, the number of survivors in Fujimi High School has dipped dangerously low into a single digit.
Based on the number of deaths alone, Fujimi High School is one of the most dangerous anime schools ever. Of course, everyone who dies is also transformed into a zombie; so the whole school is turned into blundering walking corpses... if you think about it, that's really not much different from students during their final exams.
2 YOMIYAMA NORTH MIDDLE SCHOOL - ANOTHER
It's a school with a curse; that's how you know bad things are happening in Yomiyama North Middle School. It's a miracle that this anime school from Another remains open to students. Apparently, it has an ominous and sinister legacy where people have been dropping like flies since 1972 (the anime takes place in the year 1998) when a single student died.
Turns out the classmates of that dead student awakened a malevolent entity when they pretended that their dead classmate was still alive in order to cope. During the present timeline in Another, exponentially stranger and more horrifying deaths have been happening to the students and even their relatives that by the end of the anime (and the school year) Yomiyama was already a mass grave.
1 HEAVENLY HOST ACADEMY - CORPSE PARTY: TORTURED SOULS
When an anime is titled Corpse Party: Tortured Souls there's no other interpretation to be had. This anime right here is one of the goriest, creepiest, most macabre, and many other negative superlatives that would make your grandmother faint. Heavenly Host Academy is what happens when someone tears down a haunted school notorious for being a haven for serial kidnappings and murders and builts another school on top of it.
To be fair, the new school is named Kisaragi Academy. However, Heavenly Host Academy which somehow survived in another dimension in the same spot has a tendency to steal some students from Kisaragi Academy and boy oh boy, are those students in for the horror house ride of their lives. You can probably guess next where the anime got its name.
