In 2022, it was Charlotte FC, and in 2023, St. Louis City joined the Major League Soccer. However, after seven consecutive seasons of expansion, the 2024 MLS season will not feature a new franchise.

Over the past few years, Major League Soccer has experienced significant growth, aiming to establish itself as one of the premier football leagues in the continent. The league has undergone gradual expansion, growing from 20 to 29 teams in less than a decade, adding a franchise almost annually. Nevertheless, the 2024 season breaks the streak of seven consecutive years with new additions.

In the 2023 season, St. Louis City made its MLS debut, finishing first in the Western Conference but getting eliminated by Sporting Kansas City in the first round of the playoffs.

Although the expansion streak has halted in 2024, there is anticipation for a new addition in 2025. San Diego FC is confirmed to join the MLS, becoming the league's 30th franchise and contributing to the Western Conference.

"We are thrilled to welcome San Diego to Major League Soccer as our 30th team. For many years, we have believed that San Diego would be a great market within the MLS due to its vibrant youth energy and diversity, and soccer is an essential part of so many people's daily lives," commented Don Garber, MLS Commissioner, during the announcement of San Diego FC as the league's newest franchise.
