CBR VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT

The title of a novel, series, or film is often used to grab the attention of its target audience, being one of the first ways the writer can communicate with potential buyers as to what is to be expected inside the box. People think of titles like Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and can guess from those words alone what is going to happen throughout the film.

On the other hand, some Japanese anime titles are outrageous and meant to grab a viewer's attention. These titles are often far longer than what readers are accustomed to, taking nearly as long to read as the show is to watch. For the most part, these overly long titles come from light novels and their anime adaptations, which require attention-grabbing titles to grab readers. Long anime titles sometimes feel like a gimmick or silly novelty, but many fans have embraced anime with verbose names as a fun quirk of this creative industry.

Update on November 19th, 2023 by Louis Kemner: This list of the longest anime titles has been updated to adhere to CBR's current publication standards.

Some Anime, Manga, & Light Novel Titles Are Just Plain SIlly

I can't Understand What My Husband is Saying is a very short but delightful slice-of-life anime series from the same creator as Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. This anime's eight-word title is one of the longest anime titles among all SOL anime, and it also perfectly captures this story's themes of goofy, irreverent domestic bliss.

Scores:

  • MyAnimeList: 7.28
  • IMDb: 6.7
  • Anime Planet: 3.69/5

This anime series stars a charming married couple, including the office employee Kaoru and her easygoing otaku husband Hajime, who stays at home goofing off on most days, though he also runs a successful blog. The series ends on a wholesome note, with both Kaoru and Hajime being incredibly excited about Kaoru's unexpected pregnancy.

14 I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss Makes the Bad Girl the Best Girl

I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss is a seinen romance isekai anime with the same "reformed bad girl" vibes as My Next Life as a Villainess. The heroine was reborn as Aileen Lauren d'Autriche and had her engagement to prince Cedric canceled, so Aileen decided to marry the kuudere demon king Claude instead.

Scores:

  • MyAnimeList: 7.23
  • IMDb: 6.9
  • Anime Planet: 3.81/5

This power couple will use Claude's formidable influence and Aileen's meta-knowledge to carved out a romantic niche for themselves and change the world for the better. Aileen must keep her guard up, however, because the seemingly innocent dandere Lilia Rainworth has a shocking secret. It's one that makes her a serious threat to Aileen's happiness to Claude.

13 Science Fell In Love, So I Tried to Prove It Shows Two Awkward Grad Students in Love

Science Fell in Love Has More Than One Romantic Pairing

Unlike many series with the longest anime titles, Science Fell in Love is a romantic comedy rather than an isekai series based on a light novel. The title describes the attitude of the two main characters, Ayame Himuro and Shinya Yukimura, two academically gifted but socially inept grad students at Saitama University.

Scores:

  • MyAnimeList: 7.36
  • IMDb: 6.9
  • Anime Planet: 3.98/5

Ayame and Shinya have a strong mutual crush, but they're inexperienced with love, so they'll let science do the talking. To their friends' amusement and exasperation, Shinya and Ayame will use experiments of all kinds to quantify their feelings based on behavioral changes, heart rates, blood pressure, and more.

12 The Genius Prince's Guide To Raising A Nation Out Of Debt Stars a Clever Isekai Protagonist in a Leadership Role

Genius Prince somehow doesn't give away its entire story just by reading the title. In the Kingdom of Natra, Prince Wein Salema Arbalest has recently been granted control over the Kingdom by his father. However, Wein has no desire to rule a kingdom, and he'd rather be living an easy life somewhere else.

Scores:

  • MyAnimeList: 7.39
  • IMDb: 7.1
  • Anime Planet: 3.80/5

His plan? Sell the entire nation and retire to live an easy life. There's just one problem: the nation is in debt, and to get all the money Wein wants, he'll have to make the country more valuable. Thus begins a series of plans that always turn out far better than he hopes, leading the rest of the land to believe he's a fantastic leader rather than a traitor.

11 My Next Life As A Villainess: All Routes Lead To Doom! Gives Katarina Claes a Delightful Isekai Harem

My Next Life As A Villainess was popular enough to start an entire sub-genre for isekai anime. When an unnamed main character hits her head as a child, she regains the memories of her past life, where she realizes she's living in the world of a video game she played, Fortune Lover.

Scores:

  • MyAnimeList: 7.46
  • IMDb: 7.3
  • Anime Planet: 4.01/5

This would be great news, except the character she's living as happens to be the main antagonist of the game, Katarina Claes. Worse than that, in the game, there's no happy ending for her — every single route leads to her being banished or executed. Katarina is forced to come up with ways to protect herself from her in-game fate, which has immediate effects on everyone around her.

  • MyAnimeList: 6.93
  • IMDb: 6.4

8 Suppose A Kid From The Last Dungeon Boonies Moved To A Starter Town Satirizes JRPG Conventions

Last Dungeon pokes fun at tons of classic JRPG tropes. A resident of the small town of Kunlun, Lloyd Belladonna decides he's tired of being the weakest member of his village, and leaves to visit the city to become a soldier.

Scores:

  • MyAnimeList: 6.33
  • IMDb: 7.83
  • Anime Planet: 3.40/5

The trick though is Kunlun is a town located near the most dangerous and powerful monsters in the world. While Lloyd might be the weakest member of his town, in a city far away from those villains, he's actually the strongest person in the city. It's just too bad he lacks the common sense to realize his own power.

  • IMDb: 6.3
  • Anime Planet: 3.50/5

Raul's newfound career path puts him to work beside Phino Bloodstone, a new hire who happens also to be the deceased Demon Lord's daughter. It's essentially a gender-flipped The Devil is a Part-Timer!, a series that avoids fantasy world settings for reality.
