There is something so gratifying about seeing a vision years in the making come to life, right before your eyes.

On Sunday, it came to life for Brad Holmes, the draft-obsessed Detroit Lions general manager who built this thing from scratch. For Dan Campbell, the outside-the-box hire, coaching a team nobody wants to box with. For a staff comprised of former players, who get to see the knowledge they’ve passed down to the next generation play out each and every Sunday. For a young roster, too fearless, and perhaps too naive, to be overwhelmed by the pressure those before them have succumbed to. And, most importantly, for a fan base that has waited 30 long years to see its beloved Lions win a division title.

Wait no more, Detroit. After a 30-24 victory over the Minnesota Vikings, the Lions — for the first time since 1993 — are division champions.

“I’m proud of a number of people in this organization,” Campbell said, after his team improved to 11-4 and clinched the NFC North. “Certainly proud of the coaches and the players. This is special. This is special. It’s something you don’t get to do all the time. It’s always special to win a division. I don’t care how many of them you get, because of the work that goes into it. To do something that hasn’t been done in 30 years for a team is special.”

What was once an aspiration is now a reality. The first public acknowledgment of it came Jan. 1, 2023, following a win over the Chicago Bears to ring in the New Year. Campbell said the quiet part out loud.

“We need to be competing for a division championship next year,” he said. “That’s what Brad and I set out to do.”

Campbell and his staff saw the real-time progress of a young team learning how to win. Detroit won eight of its final 10 games — a remarkable turnaround following a 1-6 start. By the end of the year, the Lions were the hottest team in football. Proof of concept was finally in their possession. It was there for all to see. So, too, was this next step.
